Leonard considered himself a very thoughtful individual, but right now he'd give an arm to just forget everything.
The death certificate had been signed and filed, the family alerted, and the glass of scotch had been poured...the only thing left was to drink it.

Re: You're right. You know how I get about ships. Over excited
It's been a week, and Leo is sleeping in a chair beside Jim's bed, too exhausted to get to his cot. It's been weird in a sense, talking to Spock like they are actually cordial.
Perhaps he should give the hobgoblin another chance, though it's been hard to forgive him after he chucked Jim off the ship four years ago.

She's always got his back.
Spock made regular rounds in medbay to check on Jim and on Leonard. He wasn't unkind, he was awkward, really out of his element in the ways of human interaction. Though it's apparent that Uhura was influencing him. His gentleness wasn't natural to most vulcans.
In the meantime though, Jim began to stir. He blinked his eyes open barely. He's breathing on his own, his skin was as healed as it was going to get, now he just had to wake up.
"...Bones...Bones..." he asked in a small voice, his hand was reaching for something.
(no subject)
"Jim, darlin', that's it, show me those baby blues. Chapel!"
He put a straw to Jim's mouth, encouraging the other man to take tiny sips as Christine and Leo start giving Jim a once over.
He's awake, thank God Jim is awake. He knew logically that it would happen sooner or later, but it was so good, beyond words to have Jim awake.
It meant that Jim could go into a normal sleep, much better for healing, "take it easy Jim, I'm here, the ship is fine, you just rest now..."
(no subject)
Slowly, very slowly he does open his eyes and it's bright. He turns his head a bit, too bright. He focuses on Leonard's voice.
"Bones..." he felt a straw at his lips and he thought then about how parched he was. He took small sips and in time he was quenched. Nurse Chapel was over, quickly getting Jim's file updated and the coma support equipment out of the way. There was commotion as people gathered to help Chapel rearrange the area around the bed for a normal patient.
Jim looked at Leonard and reached for his hand. Bones looked like shit. He had to have been a mess this whole time. Jim has no idea how long it's been but he knows it has to at least have been a day or so. The last thing he remembers is the explosion on the planet. He had promised Bones he'd be careful and he tried his best to be but still...
"Bones...I. I'm so sorry."
(no subject)
Leo smiles at Jim, the first smile he's had in over a week.
"Just rest darlin'..."
He's pretty sure most of his staff are aware of their relationship, but if they didn't know before, they would certainly know now.
"I'll be here when you wake up." All the lent up stress, he could finally feel it start to loosen. "Love you Jim."
(no subject)
"But I just woke up." and yet he can sleep, he's exhausted. Anesthesia was weird.
The staff were clearing away, relieved. They did know about it, they were actually placing secret bets on when the couple would slip up and drop a pet name that outted their relationship.
"Love you too... you should sleep." he looked for Chapel and asked for the update on the ship and the mission. He wasn't about to just nap, he had to work even a little.
"Not now, captain, doctor's orders." she chimed. She had no such order of course, you couldn't keep ship data away from the captain but she was supporting Leonard. That silenced Jim for now.
(no subject)
"You leave my nurses alone. And if you're good, I'll send Spock down later and he can give you a full report. He's been worried, in his own way."
It's probably the least negative tone he's ever taken when talking about Spock.
Leo kind of wants to either cry or throw up, but right now he's just happy Jim is okay. "Just close your eyes darlin'' I promise the next time you wake up, you'll feel a whole lot better."
(no subject)
"Spock has? Hm, how's he been doing? Wait wait sorry... I'll stop asking." he knows Bones has been through hell, the bags under his eyes and the worry in his face said it all. And what was that tone? He wasn't even mad at Spock? Bones really must have gone through it.
"Alright alright... you should sleep too. You look like shit." he reached for his hand and once he has it in his own, he closes his eyes.
(no subject)
"McCoy to Commander Spock, wanted to give you an update. Jim woke up, and everything seems to be fine. He fell back asleep, but he should be awake again and more alert within the next eight hours. He'll want to see you for an update in the ship. I'll uh....let you know when he wakes up again."
For some reason he couldn't let go of Jim's hand.
(no subject)
Jim seemed to sleep easier with Bones nearby. He wakes up in about six hours. "Hm... starving."
(no subject)
Six hours later finds Leo doing rounds, so he has his back turned to Jim, hunched over his PADD.
He doesn't hear Jim. You're gonna have to speak up a bit.
(no subject)
Jim blinks and looks around. He tries to sit up but his broken ribs aren't healed. He grunts then groans in pain. You hear that Bones?
(no subject)
"Christ on a cracker, give me a heartattack."
He's at Jim's side in seconds, scanning and gently prodding.
"Hey now, no sudden movements, I put a lot of time into putting you back together, don't try and undo it."
The scanner says that Jim didn't break anything again, so thank God.
"Things are going to be sore for a long time I'm afraid. I can give you painkillers, but they'll knock you out more often than not, and I presume you'd like to see your elf of a first officer..."
Leo is like a wirlwind for a couple of minutes, as a nurse brings a tray and finally, the bed s gently propped up.
There's silence for a minute as Leo takes in Jim's form. "Darlin'..."
(no subject)
He's inhaling his food.
"I was famished. Spock can come when he's free." He feels Bones' eyes on him.
"How bad was I? You look like you've seen a ghost...come here." He opens his arms for a hug.
(no subject)
Gingerly he takes a seat on the edge of the bed, not yet ready to take Jim into his arms.
"It was bad Jim, this is day eleven. You weren't breathing when you were beamed onboard, and the. You crashed four times on my operating table. By all rights, you should be dead by now, but thankfully, both of us are stubborn."
Leo's voice cracked a bit, but he held himself back, knowing Jim was still healing, and didn't need his shit.
(no subject)
"The last thing I remember was the explosion. I... damn Bones. I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry." He looked to him misty eyed.
"I've done this to you twice now. I don't know what to say. Tell me how you are. Please."
(no subject)
"I'll be okay Jim, just as long as you focus in getting better."
He framed Jim's face with his hands, brushing his thumbs against the other man's cheeks.
"I'm okay now darlin', I'm just glad you're with me now."
(no subject)
"Glad to be here, Bones, glad to be here." he put his hands over Leo's. "I'll be a good boy." which was a boatload of commitment from him. He hated being in the hospital but he hated hurting Leonard more. He laid still with Leo until Spock arrived.
"Captain." he had his hands behind his back, professional as ever.
"Hey Spock. Good to see you." Jim smiled as if nothing was wrong.
"And you as well, captain. How are you progressing?"
"Well enough, I'm off duty for a while longer. Don't get too comfy in the chair though."
"I assure you, captain, I will not." there is the slightest hint of humor in his tone and Jim chuckles.
"Haha..oooh oh my ribs. Don't make me laugh."
"My apologies."
"Nah you're fine. So what's happened with the ship?" Spock produced a single padd for Jim to look over.
"We are currently headed to Vendikar Delta. We have an ambassador to pick up and deliver to the deep space station Omnicron."
"Oh, so we're on light duty since I was out?"
"Not specifically due to your injuries however, I believed you might consider it fortunate timing you did not have to miss anything you consider exciting."
"You got that right, ambassadors are boring." Jim is flicking through the padd. "Except your dad, of course. He's just intimidating."
Spock takes no offense.
"Come on Spock, take a seat if you have a second. I haven't seen anyone in days."
(no subject)
Leo really needs to find more friends.
Leonard stands, taking his PADD with him. "Well, you boys get reacquainted, I'm going to finish my rounds. Um...call if you need anything. You'll be due for a painkiller after your visit with Spock."
Spock had shown up so suddenly, and when he was being intimate with Jim, he wasn't ready to share that with anyone. Plus he didn't want to get in the way of the best friends club.
(no subject)
"You don't have to... I'll call you." He and Spock have a productive talk and he leaves, back to the bridge. In the mean time Scotty sends a bottle of ale up to Leonard.
"Tae celebrate thae prood captain recoverin'! Gewd work doctor." He and Bones were friends, right? They could be friends in an evening and a couple bottles.
But soon Jim does need his pain medication.
(no subject)
Leo stands by the bed, hypo in hand.
"Ready for some more rest?"
All of him wants to crawl in with Jim and just hold the other man, but it was still sickbay, and he still had to be professional dammit.
(no subject)
"I do nothing but sleep lately. I don't get to see you." Cue the puppy eyes. "I know you're busy and sleeping will make this go faster. I just miss you." But he exposes his neck.
"I'm ready. Nap time."
(no subject)
"I'm sorry Jim, it's been...it was hard. Really hard and I miss you too, so damn much. We only just got started and now all I wanna do is hold you and love you but I'm still dealing with what happened. Every time I look at you, I see you dying on the table...again, and it feels like my world is ending."
He takes Jim's hand. "I'm sorry for bein' foolish."
(no subject)
"Bones... you're doing great. I imagine that must have been horrible having to cut me open. Are you sure you want to be my doctor? I don't want you looking at me and remembering these things. I want you to see me but we both know this is likely to happen again in some way." He reached for Leo.
"Can I at least have a hug?"
(no subject)
He looks at Jim, smiling.
"Of course sweetheart, you can have more than that."
He pushes himself onto the bed, facing Jim on his side. Gently he drapes his arm across Jim's chest, and pulls him in for a kiss.
